Write and Solve One-Step Equations

Introduce your students to writing and solving one-step equations with a variety of engaging activities.  When teaching students how to solve equations, you want them to understand that they need to perform the inverse (opposite) operation of the operation that is given.  This will allow them to isolate the variable.  

I have created and used all of the resources shown below with my middle school students.  Each of these activities gives my students a variety of opportunities to master writing and solving one-step equations.

Graphic Organizers for Problem Solving

I created this problem-solving graphic organizer for my students who struggle solving word problems and are unable to explain their work/solution. Each worksheet presents students with a real-world word problem. Students must then organize the information they are given, SOLVE the problem, JUSTIFY their work and EXPLAIN their solution. The answer key has the correct solutions as well as sample work.

I use this activity with pair-shares, as homework, stations , classwork, early finishers, and assessment prep.  I have made these graphic organizers for the following topics:

I use this 7th Grade Task Cards Bundle with my students to help them practice PROBLEMS SOLVING. This resource includes 280 task cards (7 sets/40 cards per set), student answer sheets, and answer keys. Your students will love working with these task cards. 

These TASK CARDS are perfect for reinforcing concepts through individual student practice, pair-share, early finishers, and assessment prep.

I place one task card on each of my students desks and give them 2-3 minutes to complete the problem and record their answer on their answer sheet. Once time is up I have my students "scoot" to the next desk to solve the new problem. The students LOVE doing this activity because it gets them moving. I highly recommend printing these task cards and answer key on card stock. Laminate them if possible so that they can be used for years.
